"Be strong and of good courage, and do it...
In 1955 Rosa Parks was arrested in Alabama for refusing to give her seat on the bus to a white man. Boycotts and bloodshed followed until the U.S. Supreme Court ruled segregation unconstitutional. Later Rosa wrote: 'Knowing what must be done does away with fear. When I sat down on the bus that day I'd no idea history was being made, I was only thinking about getting home. But I had to make up my mind. After many years of being a victim...not giving up my seat, and whatever I had to face afterwards, wasn't important...I felt the Lord would give me the strength to endure whatever I had to face. It was time for someone to stand up - or in my case, sit down.'
Courage is displayed at unexpected moments; what you do in such moments can change you, and those around you. Rosa Parks had “Had enough” This was a must for her, not a want or a need.
There is another story told of a spy who was sentenced to death by a general in the Persian Army. The general had a strange custom of giving condemned criminals a choice between the firing squad and 'the big door.' When the general asked, 'What will it be?' the spy chose the firing squad. Turning to his aide the general said, 'They always prefer the known to the unknown, yet, we gave them a choice.' The aide asked, 'What lies beyond the big door?' The general replied, 'Freedom.' Then he added, 'Few are brave enough to take that door.'
The dividing line between mediocrity and success is courage, the courage to take action and step into the unknown. How many of us have held back because we don’t know what the outcome will be? We are afraid of what “Might happen” despite, in reality, having no idea what it may be.
First Step to a New Life
Get Disturbed
Nothing changes in our lives until we get to the point of “Enough is enough”. Get honest with yourself, what are you “Really” unhappy about? Your weight, your finances, your relationships? Write down what disturbs you and focus. You need to identify what “MUST” change in your life for it to improve.
Why are you disturbed? & Why must i change?
You need to decide what must change and why it’s a must, not a maybe. Then commit to taking action.
What will happen if I don’t change?
Write down what you believe will happen if you don’t take action to change. If Rosa gave up her seat on the bus, would things have changed or would her life stayed the same? Identify what your “Must” is and if you are prepared to let it continue.
These steps are the same regardless of what it is you are unhappy about. If it’s weight loss, decide to eat less and exercise more. If it’s smoking, decide to stop and write down all the things that could happen if you don’t (Like lung cancer for instance). If it’s finances, draw up ways in which you can improve your financial position and do it.
All of the above requires you to “Take action” Tony Robbins in his programme “Get the Edge” asks “When is now a good time?”
Until the next time
Eric
